Once you start using Openbox you get convinced that it is a very nice competitor for any desktop environment. With a fast and no futility desktop proposal, Openbox doesn't start almost anything on startup out of the box. I mean, nothing but simplicity and performance.

I am trying to keep my Openbox this way and I am trying to stop using the panel. Some panel items I miss though, like the desktop volume control icon. I remembered that I once tried using a cool software called alsamixer, that allows controlling the volume and other sound card features from terminal. I figured I could use is direct from openbox menu. The result was quite good. If you want to try it, open the obmenu, create a new menu item and set the command as "xterm -e obmenu". Note that with the command xterm -e you may call from openbox menu any terminal program. That's it.
